Six students from a Chinese university died during a visit to a mine owned by Zhongjin Gold in Inner Mongolia, northern China.

The students from Northeastern University in Shenyang, Liaoning province, fell into a flotation tank at the facility after protective grates collapsed, the company said in a filing to the Shanghai Stock Exchange. A teacher was also injured in the incident.

Zhongjin Gold, a subsidiary of state-owned China National Gold Group Co., is one of the country’s biggest producers of the precious metal. The company has a long-standing affiliation with the university. Its stock fell as much as 8.1% after news of the tragedy.

Beijing has stepped up scrutiny of mine safety in recent years after a spate of deadly incidents. In January last year, the government issued a directive pledging tough measures to help curb the frequent occurrence of accidents in the industry.
